A short description on the Internet describes Rodiles as a “long beach with brown sand that extends for 1.000 metres. Behind it, we can find some dunes located in a thick pine forest, ideal for having a picnic and relaxing. This beach is placed on the right side of the mouth of the river of Villaviciosa”.

Apart from this definition, it is important to mention the good environmental features of this beach, its geological antiquity, the play of tides on its limits, the winds and an endless list of other features that we will mention now.

If we visit the beach of Rodiles in summertime, we will see that it is a very well-known beach, where the inhabitants from Villaviciosa and the surrounding councils come here to sunbathe and swim. At this point we can also enjoy its services: a picnic area, stands, restaurants, camping sites, toilets, showers, telephones, changing rooms, wastepaper bins, cleaning service, car park, danger signs, Red Cross post, lifeguards, a close sports port and there is also a bus route between Villaviciosa and Rodiles.

But one of the most important features of this beach is its wild aspect that is even visible when this beach is crowded during the summer. The urban environment is mainly residential and is located quite far from the beach, so this natural environment keeps well their sand, dunes, cliffs, fields, the river of Villaviciosa, “the thick pine forest”, swimmers…

The dune system of Rodiles has a great botanic richness. Recently, many efforts have been made in order to protect it. By creating wooden footbridges visitors can walk over them without stepping directly on the dunes. These footbridges also provide an easy access for disable people to get to the sea shore. This protection measure also includes the reafforestation of the dunes as well as the native vegetation.

Rodiles is in addition a littoral stretch in the Jurassic Coast, one of most important formations of this age and part of the Jurassic Museum. It counts with rocks of marine origin, very representative of the first half of the Jurassic. There are also limestone rocks that can be seen in some parts of this beach. The Formed Rodiles is rich in organic matter and in old times it even generated petrol. The rests of it can be observed in some fossils and also in some fissures of the rocks. Its paleontological treasure increased even more in 2001, when a giant squid came to this coast, a direct heir of the oldest shapes of life.

From a bird’s-eye view Rodiles forms part of a fluvial and marine structure of certain complexity. The river of Villaviciosa spreads for 7 kilometres along the Eastern part of this council. Its particular shape creates an irregular tracing that ends up in the sea between the area of the Puntal and the same beach of Rodiles. On the right hand side of this river, the coast forms the big slope of Selorio. On the left hand side there is another slope called Les Mariñes. In the middle the beach of Rodiles on low tide shows the biggest sandy areas of Asturias with marshes and interior beaches that make this area ideal to practise aquatic sports and fishing.

We can get good references from the surfers of the area who consider this beach ideal to surf. In the forums on the Internet it is said that “this beach has a wave that is formed on the western part of this beach”. “It is also said that it is a perfect left and soft wave”.

Interesting info de The beach of Rodiles
